Plastic Free July might be over but living Plastic Free should be a lifestyle, not just for one month of the year. The goal is to turn the actions you took in July into new habits for your life going forward.
- Start Small - One step at a time
- Don't be afraid to fail
- Be Mindful and do what works for you
Don't feel like you need to do everything at once. Just do one thing at a time, choose what makes the most sense for your life at the moment so it's more likely that you'll be able to stick to it. If you try too much at once, you may get overwhelmed and revert to old ways, which defeats the purpose. Remember, it's not a race, it's a marathon.
Use what you have already on hand first, don't feel like you have to run out and replace every item in your home with a zero-waste, plastic-free alternative. Replacing everything is not only costly but it goes against what sustainability is all about! Remember, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle and then Replace.
Finally, do your research. Take the time to learn and analyze. There is a ton of great information and resources out there and I encourage you to start digging in. Don't be afraid to ask questions and support small businesses! Remember, this is a lifestyle not a fad. So take your time, test and try, ask and analyze until it feels right.
To help you continue the great work you started in July, I've put together a simple checklist and a little game to help keep you on track and as a couple of easy reference tools.
